Wildcats Cruise to Start Trip
Pichon Hat Trick Boosts New Jersey
TORONTO - Marinette Pichon connected on the first three goals of the game as the New Jersey Wildcats opened their two-game trip to Canada with a 6-0 victory over the Toronto Inferno at the Ontario Soccer Centre. Cara Hammond, Marieke van Tienhoven, and Maura Gallagher also connected for New Jersey, which boosted its season-opening win streak to 11 games.
Amanda Brown didn't need to make a save to record the shutout for the Wildcats, who outshot the Inferno by an 11-4 margin. New Jersey continues its trip tomorrow when it travels to Sudbury for a 7 p.m. contest.
Pichon looked dangerous early with a shot in the 10th minute that deflected off the hands of Toronto goalkeeper Anne Ogundele and then into the right post and the French star finally broke the game open with two goals in a two minute span both off assists from Gallagher. In the 33rd minute, Anne Makinen played Gallagher through on the left side and her cross found Pichon for a first-time shot from eight yards out. Two minutes later, Gallagher floated a ball to Pichon and she followed with a highlight-reel finish with a volley over her shoulder from the top corner of the box off the far post and in.
The Wildcats put the game away with four goals in the second half starting with Pichon's third in the 64th minute. Rochelle Willis curled a cross into the box that avoided two defenders and found Pichon, who rolled a 15-yard shot into the back of the net.
Tasha St Louis and Cara Hammond recorded their first points with the Wildcats this season in the 72nd minute when Hammond volleyed home a cross from St Louis. Van Tienhoven buried a loose ball in the box after a nice effort by St Louis in the 83rd minute and Gallagher closed out the scoring by picking up a rebound and blasting it home five minutes later.
