Wildcats Give Up Goals,
Still Win Game
NEW BRUNSWICK,
NJ - In just a one minute span, the Long Island Lady Riders scored as
many goals as the rest of the opposition for the New Jersey Wildcats has
all season long. In the end it wasn't enough as the Wildcats claimed a 5-2
victory over the Lady Riders in a W-League match in front of 629 fans at
Memorial Stadium in New Brunswick.
With the Wildcats holding a 2-0 lead
after the first half, halftime substitute Heather Kain did the unthinkable
for the Lady Riders. Kain scored in the 48th and 49 minutes on breakaways
to knot the game at 2-2. Heading into the game, the Wildcats had outscored
the opposition 43-2 but Kain doubled the Wildcats' goals against total in
a one-minute span. New Jersey stretched their lead in the W-League's
Northeast Division by improving to 10-0 while the second-place Lady Riders
fell to 8-3.
Manya Makoski was the scoring star for
the Wildcats with two goals and two assists while Marinette Pichon also
scored twice. Kate Sands wrapped up the scoring for New Jersey, which was
making its only appearance of the season at Memorial Stadium.
The Wildcats had the upper hand in the
first half with a 12-3 advantage in shots and much of the possession.
Makoski opened the scoring in the 13th minute after running onto a
nice through ball from Anne Makinen. Pichon added to the lead four minutes
later when her shot from the left side snuck between Long Island
goalkeeper Meghan Frey and the near post.
New Jersey took that two goal lead into
halftime but struggled at the start of the second half after numerous
substitutions by both teams. The Wildcats changed four players while Long
Island changed three at halftime and the Lady Riders seemed to get the
better of the changes when Kain quickly knotted the score at 2-2.
The Wildcats responded well and came right back to take
the lead on an outstanding individual effort by Makoski, who brought down
an errant clear just outside the box with her back to the goal. Makoski spun past a defender and
curled a right-footed shot into the upper right corner from 18 yards out.
Pichon blew a great chance to regain
the two-goal lead in the 65th minute when she was taken down in the box
and her penalty kick bounded off the right post. The French star made
amends five minutes later when she took down a cross from Makoski and
rolled a shot under Frey from 10 yards out. Sands closed out the scoring
in the 77th minute after a nice long ball from Tasha St Louis, who was
making her Wildcats debut, put her in
behind the defense. Frey saved the first shot from Sands but she tucked in
the rebound for the final goal.
Francesca DeCristoforo also hit the
post on a penalty kick for Long Island in the 81st minute and Becky
Wachsberger grabbed the rebound shot by Kain.
The Wildcats will take
their 10-game winning streak on the road next weekend when they travel to
Canada to face the Toronto Inferno on Friday night and the Sudbury
Canadians on Saturday night.
